FIC: Growing Pains 6/7 - Guilt and Reason

Hello one and all! Guess how long I've been awake? That's right... OMIGOSH WAY WAY TOO LONG. But, I give you fic.

And a teaser in case the mods still haven't gotten to it by the time all you normal people are awake and see this...

Jack turned back to the toaster, and blinked at it.

It remained a toaster.

Sighing philosophically, Jack carefully disconnected the toaster from its power supply and turned it upside down over the dustbin. He shook it experimentally, deciding to ignore the ominous clunk that the dustbin subsequently emitted.

And since while that bit of text is amusing, it is also a sorry excuse for a teaser, here's another one...

The Doctor’s gaze dropped down to the sofa cushion between them, his expression going momentarily blank.

“That well, huh?” Jack said sympathetically.

“Trying not to think about it, actually,” the Doctor admitted, sounding almost guilty.

“It’s okay,” Jack reassured him. “You don’t have to fixate on it, you’re allowed to just spend a day relaxing and having fun. That’s pretty much the whole point, actually. But we probably ought to at least talk about that nightmare of yours.”

The Doctor’s face went blank again.

That's better, isn't it? This part is, as I said in the author's note for it on Teaspoon, somewhat epic... so much happens, such a wide range of emotional expression for this pair of characters. It was wonderfully fun to write and it's my favorite part so far.

But I already think the final part is going to be my favorite, overall. I am already bouncing in authorly glee over it, even though I've yet to write a word of it, because it's time to tie everything together and fill in the missing bits of this story.

I do have one question for those of you who are interested. I don't promise to follow your suggestions, if you have any, but I will certainly think about them carefully.

I could easily write Rose into the final part, as a fully involved character. It would require her immortality and an assumed Doomsday fix that will surely be Russelled fairly well by S4. It would make this officially an OT3 story, and I could see that working nicely.

But I can also see it just feeling like something that got tacked on at the end with little justification. The story that I'm trying to tell doesn't need Rose, and it's been all about the relationship between Jack and the Doctor up until now. There's no need to complicate it into an OT3 story.

Thoughts, anyone?

I didn't hear that they'd added those interests back because I can't access them myself, as I don't have a paid account. But the bit about removing bisexuality as an interest really ticked me off. I think it's discriminatory and that just not posting for a day is a fair response to say "we noticed that, and we want you to notice us in turn."

For me, it's just a type of communication. I'm not leaving LJ or anything. I don't mind flagging content, and I perfectly understand the need for ads, but I do think they need to work on their public relations.

p.s. Adalia, wasn't trying to say you should be on it. I just thought since you aren't on LJ a ton you might not have heard about it and would wonder where everybody went?

Oh, I agree on both points. Leaving bisexuality out of searchable interests is extremely discriminatory and prejudicial, though I have to say that it's in keeping with a wide swathe of American opinion on different sexualities; witness Fred Thompson ranting about 'sodomites' on his presidential campaign website and not getting blasted for it that I could see. But it'd been added back to searchable interests by the time I heard about the fuss.

From what I see, though I don't read the LJ news pages all that often, they do listen to members at least some of the time. Bad decisions are getting corrected. But, yeah, it'd make a lot more sense if they consulted first rather than later.

I feel like kind of a jerk the way I came across in my initial comment on this post. I didn't mean it the way I sounded and I'm not all upset about the "strike" or anything. I just figure, might as well not post today, sort of in support of the strike and sort of for my own reasons. I went out and enjoyed a beautiful day and cool people. It was good :)

Come to think of it, both the people I was hanging out with were bisexual actually. And pretty. So it was a nice day ;)

You didn't come across like a jerk at all, don't worry about it!

I was aware of the strike, and the banned words, and the fact that they'd already been un-banned days ago... I just didn't particularly care.

I'm bisexual myself, and I agree that it was discriminatory of them to ban those words, and probably symptomatic of bigger problems in the philosophies of TPTB on LJ. I even believe that the strike might actually have sent a useful message. It was conceived on the sound basis that the users provide the content, and continue doing so at their own whim.

But... honestly... it's just LJ. And some of the changes, as you both said, aren't even bad ones.

There are people who care deeply, and I say more power to them and I hope they get what they're looking for. It's just not that big a deal from where I'm sitting. ::shrug::

I'm glad. I was worried because sometimes, like everyone else probably, I don't convey my "tone" properly over the internet.
It's not like they're taking away anyone's free speech or being outright bigots or anything, so I agree it's not that big of a deal... but then neither was not posting for a day, so I figured, why not? My roommate was about on the same page, so we went to the mall and got a haircut and some fancy tea instead.

That tone issue is the single reason why I probably overuse emoticons. I'll take seeming a bit like a silly teenager over accidentally inciting a nasty flaming any day. :-)

(See? There I go again with the smiley face...)

I contemplated not posting, and I wouldn't have posted if I hadn't finished that part of GP. But in that case the not posting would have been because I had nothing to post! Speaking of... ::goes off to work on the end of GP::

Well, all things considered, I am glad you posted. I enjoyed the latest installment :)
(smiley face again, I think I'm the same way)

Adalia Zandra

greetings

This is adaliazandra's fic journal, which she hadn't planned to use very often. That plan has since been defenestrated in favor of posting fic update notices and rambles about DW and TW.

If you note the spiffy paid-account layout, that's because nightrider101 is simply the most wonderful person ever! :-)

If I seem to have disappeared off the face of the Internet, it's because I probably did. I don't actually *like* suddenly ignoring my LJ friends and leaving my stories hanging, though, so odds are I'll be back eventually.
